Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet Intergalactic soundtrack

Naughty Dog hired Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross to score Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. That is not a trailer stunt. Reznor’s last complete video-game soundtrack was Quake in 1996. The pair’s film work — The Social Network, Watchmen, Challengers — is the modern reference, not a rock-band cameo. Neil Druckmann has said the studio is a fan of their catalogues and that the announcement trailer is only a tease of what they are writing for Jordan’s campaign.

The trailer still opens on someone else’s song. Druckmann looked for a 1980s track about faith and chose Pet Shop Boys’ “It’s a Sin.” In an alternate history where spaceflight is normal by 1986, licensed pop is diegetic culture. Jordan’s cabin has a Sony disc player for a reason. The needle drop is world-building. The original score is the emotional weather. Hold both in your head when you replay the trailer breakdown.

What a Reznor and Ross Naughty Dog score might do

The Last of Us used Gustavo Santaolalla’s nylon guitar as a human pulse against infected horror. Uncharted used orchestral adventure. Intergalactic needs a third colour: industrial tension, analog synth, and melody that can turn sacred without quoting a real liturgy. Reznor and Ross are unusually good at that middle space — music that feels liturgical and mechanical at once. Sempiria’s religion, described in the story primer, is fictional and thousands of years deep. The score has to sell dogma you cannot look up in an encyclopaedia.

Expect motifs for:

• Jordan’s ship and the 1980s-future of her personal gear.
• Sempiria’s surface, which the trailer paints as fog, trees, and wreckage rather than only chrome corridors.
• The waveform blade, whose visual already looks like audio. A sword that resembles a graphic equaliser is a gift to composers who think in textures.
• Silence. Druckmann wants you lonely. The bravest cue in this game may be the one that does not play.

How to listen before launch

There is no OST store page yet. Do not buy unofficial “Intergalactic score” albums on streaming storefronts; they are keyword grabs. Watch the official PlayStation upload, the Naughty Dog descriptive-audio cut, and later showcases. When a soundtrack drops, it will be announced beside the game, not by a random instrumental playlist.

If you want adjacent listening, Reznor and Ross’s film scores are the honest homework. Pet Shop Boys’ Actually-era singles explain the trailer’s irony: a dance song about guilt playing while a hunter ignores a warning. That joke is also the thesis of the story page — institutions, sin, and the cost of belief.

Tie-ins you can already hear in other Naughty Dog games

There is no Intergalactic radio in The Last of Us. There is a cosmetic: Jordan’s jacket as an Ellie skin in Part II Remastered, added in 2025. It is a wardrobe nod, not a shared universe. Keep that distinction when marketing teams recycle the red bomber in screenshots.
