Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet Intergalactic development
Studio timeline from the 2020 start through performance-capture wrap.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet began after The Last of Us Part II launched in 2020. Neil Druckmann has said the team has been on this original adventure since then. For several of those years, a large share of Naughty Dog was also building The Last of Us Online. When that multiplayer project was cancelled in 2023, most of those people moved onto Intergalactic. That staffing history explains both the ambition and the quiet: the game did not have the entire studio from day one.
Druckmann leads as creative director and writer, with Matthew Gallant and Kurt Margenau as game directors and Claire Carré as narrative director. He has called Intergalactic the studio’s most expansive and likely most expensive game. A writers’ room was built to work more like a television staff. Thousands of years of Sempirian religious history were written before many levels were locked. Anime such as Akira and Cowboy Bebop sat on the mood board beside Uncharted’s traversal and Part II’s melee. The story and gameplay pages translate those references for players.
Crunch, the Sony demo, and a public contradiction
After Part II, Naughty Dog talked about reducing crunch. In late 2025, Bloomberg reported that staff were asked to work at least eight extra hours a week, and to come into the office five days instead of three, to finish an internal demo for Sony. The overtime window ran roughly from late October to mid-December 2025. That demo was a publisher checkpoint, not a public download. It is useful context for why 2026 still had no gameplay showcase: Sony wanted to see the game, not just the trailer.
Performance capture
Principal performance capture wrapped on 31 August 2026. Naughty Dog posted the milestone with a Cowboy Bebop nod — “See you, space cowboy…” — and said the cinematic shoot was ambitious and that the cast “killed it.” Three days later, Intergalactic still did not appear at State of Play; that absence is logged on the State of Play page. Tati Gabrielle, Tony Dalton, and others have described dotted suits, a large volume, and a process that rewrites scenes when a performance surprises the directors. Druckmann has said Gabrielle’s Jordan already changed writing. Wrap means the main actors are largely done on the stage. It does not mean animation, lighting, shaders, localisation, or combat feel are done.
Localisation as a production signal
Through late 2025 and 2026 the studio posted language QA and support roles covering French, German, Italian, Japanese, Arabic, Portuguese, Thai, and Russian, among others. Localisation usually starts when scripts are stable enough to translate, which can still be a year or more before launch. It is a healthy sign, not a street date. This wiki’s own languages are a separate choice, explained on PS5 and platforms.
What to watch next
A gameplay trailer, an accessibility featurette, and a dedicated State of Play slot are the logical public steps after mocap. If they arrive, news logs the date and the release tracker gains a row. Until then, development news will look like credits, job listings, and the occasional wrap photo — not patch notes.
For the people in the volume, keep the cast page open. For the calendar question everyone actually types, use release date. Localisation testers and a wrapped volume are encouraging, but they are still production, not a street date you can circle in ink. Treat job listings as weather, not as a calendar invite.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
When did development start?
In 2020, after The Last of Us Part II. The full studio shift came later, after Online was cancelled.
Is the game in localisation?
Job listings show language QA in progress. That is not the same as a finished, shippable build.
What did mocap wrapping mean?
Principal performance capture finished on 31 August 2026. Animation and systems work continue after that.
Who are the game directors?
Matthew Gallant and Kurt Margenau, with Neil Druckmann as creative director. See cast and crew.
